Choose the model by the box joint

ORIENS crate clips are metal fasteners for assembling and dismantling compatible wooden and plywood packaging boxes. The standard C057 and C058 models are stamped from Grade 50 carbon steel and heat-treated for spring action. Clips are pressed into position by hand; a pry bar is used to release them.

Start with the panel joint, select a model, and then specify the surface finish. C057 is intended for compatible 13 mm panel applications and C058 for compatible 8 mm applications. Panel thickness alone does not establish fit: confirm the complete joint geometry with a drawing and sample.

The profile dimensions above are drawing references, not overall length * width * height. The models are not interchangeable simply because both are called crate clips.

What ORIENS supplies

We supply clips, hinges and related hardware. Wooden crates and packaging bags are not included. We can discuss introductions or sourcing assistance for complementary packaging products.

Materials and surface finish selection
The standard C057 and C058 specification

Both standard models use Chinese Grade 50 carbon steel, also written as 50# steel. Precision sheet metal stamping forms the clip, and heat treatment provides spring action with a specified hardness of 42–46 HRC. “Grade 50" identifies the material grade; it is not a sheet gauge.

ORIENS supports custom crate clips and currently has more than 50 custom clip designs. Material options include 65Mn steel and 301 stainless steel. Material, dimensions, heat treatment, hardness and joint compatibility are confirmed for each custom design. The standard C057 and C058 models in this guide remain Grade 50 carbon steel.

Finish Specified minimum thickness Appearance
Zinc plating ≥ 5 μm Silver
Electrophoretic coating ≥ 25 μm Black
How to choose a finish

Specify the required appearance and the environment in which the packaging will be stored and transported. Tell us whether the clips may encounter condensation, salt contamination, outdoor storage, repeated handling or abrasion. Confirm the selected finish on a physical sample when appearance is important.

Coating thickness alone does not determine corrosion performance. Surface condition, coating system, handling damage and exposure all matter.

Sea freight and corrosion testing

There is no universal number of days before a clip will rust during sea transport. No verified salt-spray duration is specified for these products in this guide. If a corrosion requirement is contractual, agree the test method, exposure duration, acceptance criteria and representative sample before production. Ask for an applicable test report rather than converting micrometres into hours.

Colour and logo customization

We offer a range of colours and can customize the colour to your supplied RAL colour code or colour card. Powder coating is available for coloured clips; the process and colour appearance should be confirmed on a sample. Powder coating is separate from black electrophoretic coating. Coating specification, packing and lead time for custom colours are confirmed separately.

We can add your company logo to the clips by stamping, laser marking or screen printing. Please provide the logo artwork, position and dimensions. We will confirm the appropriate process for the clip material, geometry and surface finish.

Joint fit and assembly
Check fit before placing a production order

Provide a section drawing or clear photographs of the panel edge and assembled joint. Include panel thickness, rebates, grooves or battens where present, and any features that may interfere with the clip. Do not select solely from a model number or an external photograph of the box.

Trial the selected clip on representative panels. Check that it seats fully, retains the intended joint and can be released with the removal tool. Do not force an unsuitable clip or alter its profile to compensate for an incompatible joint.

Installation sequence
  1. Position the compatible box panels and align the mating edges according to the box design.
  2. Confirm that the clip location and joint match the approved sample.
  3. Press each clip into its intended position by hand. Keep fingers clear of the clamping area.
  4. Inspect the installed clips and panel joints before moving the crate. The complete packaging design must suit the load and transport conditions.
Removal and reuse
  1. Support the panels and ensure that opening the crate will not release an unsecured load.
  2. Engage a suitable pry bar in the clip slot. Apply controlled leverage to release the clip while keeping clear of its release path.
  3. Remove the clip and dismantle the panels in the sequence specified for the box.
  4. Before reuse, inspect the clips, coating and panel joints. Replace clips with cracks, permanent deformation, loss of retention or other damage.

Hand installation does not mean tool-free removal. ORIENS supplies a dedicated crate clip removal pry bar; confirm compatibility with your selected clip and joint.

How many clips does a crate need

For an initial layout discussion, a box around 1 metre in size may use two clips along each relevant panel edge; a larger design may require three or four. This is a starting point, not a fixed total per crate or a load rating. Final quantity and spacing depend on panel stiffness, joint geometry, cargo, handling and transport requirements.

No universal clip spacing, rated load or verified cycle count is specified here. Validate the complete crate and its fastener layout for the intended application.

Packing and purchasing information

The following confirmed carton data applies to standard C057 and C058 clips with zinc plating or black e-coat. Extra pallets and outer packaging are excluded. Custom models and finishes require their own packing confirmation.

Packing item C057 C058
Pieces per carton 125 250
Carton weight 17.6 kg 17.0 kg gross, including carton
Carton dimensions 450 * 320 * 170 mm 490 * 240 * 170 mm
Cartons for 500 pieces 4 2
Weight for 500 pieces 70.4 kg 34.0 kg gross, including cartons
Volume for 500 pieces 0.097920 m³ 0.039984 m³

C057 shipping figures are quoted by carton weight; a separate net/gross breakdown is not specified. C058 shipping calculations use the confirmed 17 kg gross carton weight. The 135 g and 68 g unit weights are references, not a basis for inferring carton tare weight.

The quoted capacity is a product-line total, not a separate daily capacity for every model or a guaranteed allocation to an individual order. Freight, payment terms, Incoterms and any special inspection requirements should be agreed in the quotation.

Plan a sample approval

Use stock samples to check the joint, installation, removal and finish before confirming production quantities. Record the approved model, drawing revision, finish and packing specification so that purchasing, manufacturing and receiving teams use the same reference.

Product options and supply support
Four routes to a suitable hardware specification
Product group When to discuss it
C057 and C058 standard clips A compatible standard panel joint and zinc or black e-coat are required.
Double-wire crate clips The box design requires a wire-form clip. Confirm its drawing, material, finish and fit separately.
Custom crate clips The joint, dimensions, colour or logo differ from the standard offering.
Removal pry bars A compatible tool is needed to release the clip through its slot.

Do not transfer C057/C058 sheet thickness, hardness, packing or application data to double-wire or other custom clips. Each configuration needs its own approved specification.

Production and inspection

The standard product specification covers precision sheet metal stamping, heat treatment for spring action and the agreed surface finish. For purchasing approval, identify the critical dimensions, hardness requirement, finish thickness, visual condition and sample fit that need to be checked.

Where required, request material identification, dimensional results, hardness results and coating thickness records for the relevant product or batch. Additional corrosion, retention or repeated-use tests need an agreed method and acceptance criteria. Do not treat the existence of a factory management certificate as a test result for a particular clip.

Long-term packaging supply experience

ORIENS has 15 years of experience in the production and export of crate clips. We maintain long-term, stable supply relationships with large wooden packaging companies serving markets including Europe, the United States and Mexico, with combined monthly supply reaching 1.6 million pieces.

The monthly supply figure is the combined total across customers and crate clip models, not the volume for any single customer or model.

Buyer questions and quotation checklist
Can C057 and C058 be exchanged?

Not automatically. Their widths and profiles differ. C057 is for compatible 13 mm panel applications; C058 is for compatible 8 mm applications. Confirm the complete joint with a sample.

Are the clips stainless steel?

The standard models in this guide are Grade 50 carbon steel, heat-treated for spring action. Zinc plating and black e-coat do not change the base metal into stainless steel.

Can I install and remove them without tools?

Installation is by hand on a compatible joint. Removal requires a suitable pry bar engaged in the clip slot.

How many times can they be reused?

ORIENS advises that undamaged clips can support more than 1,000 assembly and removal cycles under suitable conditions. Actual reuse depends on the clip and joint condition. Inspect before each reuse; this guidance is not a verified cycle-test rating or a guaranteed minimum service life.

Which finish lasts longer at sea?

A fixed service life cannot be inferred from the specified coating thicknesses. Confirm the exposure conditions and any required corrosion test before ordering.

Is the reference price a final quotation?

No. Confirm the selected model, finish, quantity, delivery terms and any custom requirements. MOQ is 500 pieces per model.

Can ORIENS supply a complete wooden crate?

Our standard offer is hardware. We can discuss introductions or sourcing assistance for crates and packaging accessories separately.
